The African National Congress (ANC) mourns the passing of Professor Sibusiso Mandlenkosi Emmanuel Bengu, a distinguished educator, diplomat, and servant of the people.
Born in Kranskop, Natal, Prof Bengu began his teaching career in 1952 and went on to found Dlangezwa High School in 1969, serving as principal until 1976.

He also held the position of Dean of Students at the University of Zululand before leaving South Africa in 1978. His academic achievements included earning a PhD in Political Sciences from the University of Geneva and becoming the first black Vice-Chancellor of Fort Hare University in 1991, a transformative milestone in higher education.
In 1994, President Nelson Mandela appointed Prof Bengu as South Africa’s first Minister of Education in the democratic era.
He oversaw the amalgamation of 17 fragmented education departments into a unified system, introduced Curriculum 2005 to reform the school curriculum, and worked tirelessly to dismantle aparth
